To understand how your upper body should rotate when you swing, focus on the movement of your shoulders.
Players typically think the shoulders move like a coat hanger – moving in unison throughout the swing. Instead, each shoulder moves independently. This drill (see photos above) will help you feel the correct sensation.
Place each of your index fingers on the corresponding shoulder like I’m doing here, and mimic a backswing rotation. You’ll feel your right shoulder move more than your left and your chest broaden as you complete your move back. As you transition into the downswing, feel your left shoulder separate from your chin, again broadening your chest, as your right shoulder fires towards the target.
Try to reproduce this action when you’re hitting balls, and you’ll improve your upper-body action tremendously.
