Play a hybrid from the rough

 BY LORENA OCHOA 27-07-2010

A hybrid is such an easy club to play with, so make the most of it - even in tough situations.

+ Putting: Reading the greens

+ Play it more up than you think

+ Instruction: Start smoothly down

I try to take advantage of my length, so I hit driver off the tee whenever possible. That’s why the hybrid is one of my favourite clubs.

It’s so easy to hit from bad lies, I can gamble with my tee shots and still salvage a good approach from the rough.

The hybrid has a wide, rounded sole and extra weight that make it easy to slide under the ball without getting caught in the long grass.

You don’t have to be strong to hit a crisp hybrid shot from the rough – the club is designed to work for players of all levels. The key is to set up correctly and make a steep swing.

I start with a slightly open clubface (inset) to add some loft to the club. I vary the distance I hit the ball by changing how much I choke down on the club. (The more I grip down, the shorter I’ll hit it.) I put more weight on my left side and play the ball opposite my left heel. Because the face is open, I usually play a fade on these shots, so I aim left of the target and swing in that direction.
